Lozano, Ruben
Ruben Lozano was one of the first potters to get into the business around 1980. He was born in Mexicali and moved to Mata Ortiz in his mid teens. In the beginning he was working with Pilo Mora and Emeterio Ortiz. Then he worked with Chevo, Nicolas and Macario Ortiz.
Macario had Ruben experimenting with turquoises, bright greens, yellows and reds on graphite blackware in the mid 1980s but he slowly went back to making simple, highly polished blackware with almost never any painting.
Pilo Mora used to make Ruben’s larger pots for him but now his wife, Maria Anastasia Villa de Lozano, does. She also helps him with the polishing process.
In 2019 Ruben earned a First Place ribbon at the annual Concurso Ceramica de Mata Ortiz for a burnished graphite black piece, with or without decoration.
