Duran, Shirley

Shirley Duran was the daughter of Santanita Suazo.  She was born and grew up at Santa Clara Pueblo. Among her siblings were Martha Haungooah, Mae Tapia, Candelaria Suazo and Margie Naranjo. Like her sisters, Shirley learned how to make pottery as she was growing up. Then she married Joseph Duran and moved to his home at Tesuque Pueblo.

At Tesuque she continued to make pottery in the Santa Clara style, most often small black-on-black bowls and jars.

Tesuque potter Koty Duran is Shirley’s grandson.
