Chavarria, Sunday
Loretta “Sunday” Chavarria was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1963. Her parents were Loretto and Stella Chavarria, her paternal grandmother Teresita Naranjo, her maternal grandmother Pablita Chavarria. Among her siblings were Florence Browning, Elizabeth Naranjo, Reycita Naranjo, Clara Shije, Mary Singer and Mildred Chavarria. Sunday grew up in a pottery making household and learned by osmosis. Her pottery was mentioned in the 1974 Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery exhibit at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque. She was active in the marketplace as a teenager.
After finishing school, she took a day job as a computer operator at Los Alamos National Lab. As she felt like it, she made pottery. She participated in the Santa Fe Indian Market for many years. She was also a vendor at the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts and Crafts Shows for years.
Sunday mostly made carved blackware and redware, bowls and jars, decorated with sgraffito etching.
