Unknown Acoma Potter
Pottery has been made in the environs of Acoma Pueblo for more than a thousand years. Except in rare cases, no one signed their name to any of it until the early 1950s. Even then, it was maybe another decade before everything was being signed with more than a perfunctory “Acoma, N.Mex.” or “Acoma, NM” or “Sky City, N.Mex.” Once it grew beyond the tourist trade and into an art market it was inevitable: signatures came to denote relative values. But there is still a lot of Acoma Pueblo pottery out there that was made before signatures came along. Almost none of it can be attributed to any single potter.
