Navasie, Veronica
Veronica Navasie was born to Woodrow and Laura Preston of the Hopi First Mesa village of Walpi in 1945. She learned how to make pottery from her mother as she was growing up. Then she married Maynard Navasie. Maynard had learned how to make pottery from his mother, Joy Navasie aka Second Frogwoman, and he taught Veronica how to make the whiteware his family was famous for.
Veronica was most known for her black-and-red-on-white jars with designs that included parrots and feathers. She usually collaborated with Maynard and they signed most of their pottery with a frog-with-webbed-toes hallmark and the initials “MN” & “VN” nearby. Veronica would usually form their pots and Maynard would usually sand, polish and paint them. Maynard passed on in 1999, Veronica in 2003.
