David, William

William David became active as a Hopi potter in the marketplace around 1990. His sister, Lana Yvonne David entered the pottery marketplace about the same time. Their elder brother, Neil David Jr., followed more in their father’s footsteps: he became a painter and kachina carver.

William made mostly polychrome jar and seed pots and preferred to decorate them with rainbirds, rain clouds and the symbols of germination. He signed most of his pieces with just “W. David” as his clay and his designs had clearly Hopi origins.
