Corn maiden
About the Corn Maiden
For centuries the lives of people in the Southwest have revolved around the seasons, the rain and the cultivation of the three sisters: corn, squash and beans. In their world, it's only natural that each would evolve a spiritual personality of its own, a figure to give homage to. The Corn maiden is the primary one.
When clans evolved, the Bear clan, the medicine clan, was one of the first. So was the Corn clan. The Corn clan was a female clan, charged with preserving the seed and carrying it forward. The making of pottery was in their purview, as part of the cooking, serving and preserving aspects of their mission. Pottery was (and is) used in religious ceremonies, too. It seems only natural that in the pantheon of figures created in the pueblos over the years, the Corn maiden would be one of them.
