Tafoya, Agapita

Agapita Tafoya was the wife of Camilio Tafoya. Born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1904, she passed on in 1959. Among her children were Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower.

Born Agapita Silva, she was an accomplished potter before she married Camilio. From the 1930s to the early 1950s she made black-on-black, polychrome and carved bowls, jars and plates.

Agapita was chosen to go to Paris, France, to be honored for her work but she declined. Maria Martinez took her place and in Paris, she started to build an international interest in Pueblo pottery.
