Gutierrez, Carol

Carol Gutierrez is the daughter of Frank and Helen Gutierrez. Her heritage is 1/2 Santa Clara Pueblo, 1/2 San Ildefonso Pueblo. Her mother married into Santa Clara Pueblo and moved there. Carol and her sister Kathy were raised at Santa Clara but as both learned to make pottery from their mother in the San Ildefonso style, they sign their pieces “San Ildefonso”.

Carol also has an illustrious family tree, filled with well-known painters and potters. Like most folks from San Ildefonso she has a remote connection with Maria Martinez. Closer is her uncle Gilbert Atencio, a famous San Ildefonso painter.

Carol prefers to make black-on-black jars, bowls, plates and miniatures. Her favorite design to use is the avanyu.
