Vigil, Doug
Born in 1954, Doug Vigil is the son of Albert Vigil of San Ildefonso Pueblo and Josephine Cordova of Taos Pueblo. Doug’s parents made pottery together and signed it as Albert and Josephine Vigil. Doug’s grandfather, Romando Vigil, was a prominent member of the “San Ildefonso School” of watercolor artists. His great aunt was Maria Martinez.
Albert learned how to make pottery from Maria and learned how to paint from his father. He passed that knowledge down to Doug and Doug’s wife, Charlotte.
Maria had influenced Albert to specialize in redware and that process is what he taught Doug and Charlotte. Doug and Charlotte were exhibitors at Santa Fe Indian Market for about 20 years, earning multiple ribbons for their painted jars and plates.
Doug and Charlotte sometimes worked together, sometimes apart. The signature on the bottom of one of their pieces will indicate the difference.
Doug passed on in 2007.
