Martinez, Lucy

Lucy Martinez was originally from Picuris Pueblo. After she married Richard Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo, she moved to his home in the same neighborhood as Maria and Julian Martinez.

Lucy had learned how to make pottery while growing up at Picuris. At San Ildefonso, she learned the San Ildefonso ways and she and Richard collaborated for years. She made the pots and he painted and fired them. They were among the first to follow in Maria and Julian’s footsteps making black-on-black bowls and jars. After a few years they moved to making miniature kivas and then, with some urging from Rose Gonzales, they began carving their black bowls.

Their daughter, Alice Martinez, learned to make pottery as she was growing up but she says her son does all her painting for her.
