Non-Pueblos

Some of the pottery we offer is produced by folks coming from non-pueblo backgrounds. They use the same techniques and methods to produce and decorate their pottery, they just aren’t from a pueblo. Some of them are from tribes that don’t normally make pottery, some are working to resurrect an ancient skill their people almost lost, some learned from Puebloans and some taught.

Lucho Soler is a Peruvian artist who taught at the Institute for American Indian Arts. Michael Hawley was an Anglo artist who went to Hopi and learned how to make pottery the traditional way. Richard Zane Smith has been working with other tribes to resurrect their own languages and their own pottery making heritage.
